I decided to attend my Crit in person rather than giving instructions on which films to show over zoom. Videos always seem to play glitchy when delivered via zoom.
It was nice being in in person, sharing time with others on the course.
I also brought my leg sculpture (so far) in:
Towards the end of my brief presentation I informed the group that my MRI scan had shown blood flow to my tumour and the surgeon suspected it had become a low grade cancerous liposarcoma which was slow growing and non aggressive. Although it is considered slow growing I have had it for over 3 yrs and its now the size of a slightly deflated rugby ball. I just wanted to give some context to where my head is at the moment.
I played several films from the previous 2 or 3 blog entries, a couple of fun things I did using stop frame animation, this one being of some pots I made for xmas pressies:
But the main film I wanted to show was this of my process so far with special layering and timing to music:
The only question I asked was regarding the music. Whether or not to use other peoples music or make my own, or use my own voice or noises that I collect. The punky tunes that I used were considered overwhelming and distracting from my film. as Neil suggested. And Sam suggested a band Matmos to consider as their tunes were from alternative instruments and sometimes surgical.

Josie suggested that I already had enough material but that things needed rearranging tweaking or fine tuning.(not her exact words but along those lines).
Email from Mark:
there were a couple of comments / points I wanted to make – and these may have come up in the conversation after I left;
in relation to the sound, when I look at the sculpture and the studio images I see lots of potential sound sources, and wondered about you using these as part of the soundscape – recording the mesh, the plastic of the covid tests, the base plate, the wires, and editing these sounds into the animations? or adding them as another layer?
I wondered about the leg as a single sculpture versus the elements that are going on within it – the femur and red wires feels like a piece in itself, and the loops of thick wire with the covid tests could work as a stand-alone separate piece also – so my response when thinking about eventually showing the work, was to imagine a number of related sculptural objects that connect to the leg, to the cast, to the bone, the implant, the scar, and that they might exist as a group of six or seven objects?
hope this is useful
and I meant to say that I enjoyed seeing the animation and the sculpture …
there is lots of energy and dynamism within the work;
So I am now looking at new ways to present not only my filming but also my sculpture and consider the rationale behind what audio I use.
