January 2021 Group Crits & Claybus on the back burner

Pixel painting in progress Aldous George

MY Crit Aldous George

Back in October I had a tutorial with Beth Richards (which I will cover in a separate post) which was a very informative conversation about socially engaged art and how Claybus could go down this route. I have followed everything up that Beth suggested but unfortunately, due to my health and lack of mobility I have had to put Claybus on the back burner for now. I still intend to research material relevant to promoting and progressing Claybus but until I have had hip replacements I do not have the physical or mental ability to promote Claybus, not to mention Lockdown and social distancing which has put an abrupt halt to the possibilities of workshops being run out of the back of a van. I am going to need a bigger Bus. With this in mind, I shall be using my MA to explore myself as an artist, what questions and concepts do I want to explore and why I use figurative and fragmented body images for most of my work. The presentation I gave was geared up to both Claybus research and my own practice. At the moment, I am enjoying the process of presenting my ideas to everyone, as I find this is helping me to understand more about myself and the work I am involved with. I have found the group crits invaluable and I would like to thank everyone for there interest and input. I haven’t quite got round to following up all the suggestions yet but am enjoying working my way through.

From recent work and having to share with you guys I think I can now clarify my main threads:

A love hate relationship with technology and feeling compelled to warn of potential threats to humanity that computer technology/AI/augmentation/cloning etc poses. I also seem to be obsessed with the simulation theory at the moment.

Mental Health issues that society seems to have caused.

My own physical health that has drawn awareness to other people’s disabilities and how physical well-being can be taken for granted.

The therapeutic remedies that art possess both singularly and as a group whether that be a couple of people or larger communities.

I think it would be safe to say as a starting point that I use figurative images in my work because that is where mental and physical issues reside.
