Round up of Group Crits/Presentations from Autumn 2020:
Chat and Notes from Aldous and Neil’s crit/presentation Thursday 12th November
MY (ALDOUS’) CRIT
My presentation (PDF) below
Sinta suggested looking at El Anatsui,a sculptor from Ghana who currently lives and works in Nigeria. He transforms simple, everyday materials into striking large-scale installations. And also the work of Jeremy Deller who is an English conceptual, video and installation artist. Much of Deller's work is collaborative; it has a strong political aspect, in the subjects dealt with and also the devaluation of artistic ego through the involvement of other people in the creative process. He won the Turner Prize in 2004
Zanna suggested investigating Rational Aesthetics: Term created by curator Nicholas Bourriaud in the 1990s to describe the tendency to make art based on, or inspired by, human relations and their social context
Neil suggested looking at the work of Chuck Close who I am familiar with in the context of his pixel inspired large paintings.
Anya suggested Richard Serra who I am already very much influenced by but have discovered more on his metal works and purchased a couple of books. And the work of Thomas Hirshorn who is widely regarded as a leading artist of his generation. Best known for his sculptural constructions produced from disposable mass manufactured goods, Hirschhorn gathers together references and imagery culled from popular media alongside the work of radical theorists such as Gilles Deleuze and Georges Bataille. Hirschhorn uses everyday and found materials such as plastic sheeting, cardboard, aluminium, packing tape and magazine images to create a dystopian reality. Love this. I had a similar idea to collect litter and make pixel art from it.
Sam has mentioned a link with reference to AI possibly producing an image. And also requested to see some of my ‘coding’ sketchbook notes which I have shared with him and since shared with everyone via a blog post.
Juli suggested the Socially engaged print van project by Susan Lewry which I found very useful.
NEILS’S CRIT
I seem to have misplaced my notes on Neils presentation but from memory loved his ideas around travelling scenic/coastal roads in his van using the side to hang his canvas and engaging with people to create debate. I can envisage some sort6 of collaboration with Neil in his landscape van and me in claybus. Also really looking forward to Neil’s investigations into Clay and its connection and relationship with the landscape.

Chat and Notes from Sam and Victoria’s crit/presentation Thursday 5th November 2020
SAM’S CRIT
I enjoyed Sam’s discussion which outlined interests in the sensations and history of technology. How worlds are a big ‘net of things’ interacting with each other. Sam mentioned he suffered from depression which I think will probably play a role in his work and the questions he may be asking. His Vivarium idea id very interesting and I look forward to seeing this develop. He mentioned moss and I offered a potential climb into a tree to discover a trees ecosystem which may or may not happen depending on my hip osteoarthritis. I think there is a crossover of ideas and interests between Sam and myself and I look forward to a potential collaboration of ideas, theories and potential works.
VICTORIA’S CRIT
Intrigue and curiosity stem from Victoria’s presentation. It seems obvious she has a keen interest in history, specifically that of witchcraft and alchemy with her enquiries into witch-hunting, and possibly producing a zine. Victoria’s digital photograph journal ability/enquiry strikes me as a strength of hers, coupled with her current sculptural ideas with fragile structures/materials, looks to make a interesting fusion of technology and history. I suggested looking at Helena Whittens photography who produces atmospheric photos in the style of Francessca Woodman.
