End of year: Waypoint Exhibition & MA Magazine 19.06.22

Time-lapse video of installation and opening evening:

Waypoint Exhibition:

Installation began on Monday 13th June. I picked Sam up from his house to help him get his work to uni. Sam also helped me to pick up my mountain of screens, media players cables etc from the media hub. I have to mention that I struggled to use the media hubs booking system and would recommend ( to myself) doing this well in advance and making sure you have exactly what you want booked as I didn't and had to make do. Some of the kit didn't work or had bits missing so I spent a lot of time going backwards and forwards to the media hub but got there in the end. The media hub did help as much as they could and also managed to pat test my stereo on the day.

Anya set up a brief initial get together meeting and we were quick to set about exploring the space and deciding on who would go where. I found that everyone gelled and all were happy to help or be helped and that we all encouraged and complimented each other.

There were initial concerns that the space was too big for us but it soon seemed to feel balanced. I played about with spreading my work quite widely out and bringing it in close. My installation felt like organised chaos dumped on the floor but with personal fine tuning, it quickly began to feel just right. Many things were played about with and changed, fixed and decided in an ad lib, on your feet kind of way. The sound was the main concern as we didn't want it to be a distraction. It sounded great coming out of four screens at a low volume but it was easier to have it coming out of my stereo in the end to enable ease of volume control. I enjoyed working with Anya and also watching Anya manage the curation.

After just Monday, I was pretty much done. Anya was happy with my days efforts and any fine tuning could be done on Friday when I returned which consisted of volume control and qr code printing and shortening my performance piece. My performance at the opening consisted of me stomping across the floor in a cyborg suit, in time(ish) to robotic walking noise and then standing with my eyes and mouth playing on mini screens on my face and I had slightly synthesised extracts from my essay booming out from the stereo. I couldn't see, but apparently it was well received.

The opening evening was a great success. There was a good turn out and a nice vibe to the space. I think the performance pieces from myself, Neil and Sam really helped give the exhibition some substance and mark the occasion.

I invigilated on Sunday afternoon and there were only 2 visitors on my watch. The uni was dark and uninviting and I feel more could have been done to attract more visitors. But apart from that I think it was a huge success and I really enjoyed and appreciated the whole experience.
